Book Reviews

Today we read a hilarious book by Kara LeReau and Scott Magoon.  This book is about an ugly, big, mean fish who has trouble getting along and sharing with others! Have you ever met someone like that? I bet THIS book would help them think twice about the way they treat others! We hope you take our recommendation and enjoy Ugly Fish!

Plant a Kiss is a lovely book about a little girl who actually PLANTS A KISS!  Can you guess what happens?  We talked about what WE would plant if we could!  Suggestions ranged from computers, money, and mashed potatoes to PEACE and HAPPINESS!

A Sick Day for Amos McGee is a Caldecott Award winning book.  The illustrations were awesome because the animals looked realistic, but the details and scenes weren't.  We decided the lesson of the story was that you should treat your friends how YOU want to be treated. The best part was when the animals helped Amos McGee feel better.

The Lorax is a favorite Dr. Seuss story about a creature who teaches us to treat nature right.  We enjoyed it because it is a rhyming book.  The illustrations made us want to find real truffela trees.  We hope that people read the story and learn not to mess around with nature.  "UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it's not".

On March 7th, 2012 (National Read Aloud Day), our class was lucky enough to welcome Senator James Timilty, along with his friend Patrick, as a guest reader!  He did a fantastic job reading us a hilarious story called Prudy's Problem and How She Solved It.  In this story, the main character, Prudy collected too many things.  Her collections were so huge that her room exploded!  What could she do to solve this problem?!  You'll have to read the book yourself to discover her creative solution.

Today, the day before St. Patrick's Day, we chose to read a fun tale called The Night Before St. Patrick's Day by Natasha Wing!  It is told like the classic story, The Night Before Christmas.  However, in The Night Before St. Patrick's Day the kids are looking for a leprechaun so they can ask him for his gold.  Leprechauns, as you know though, are VERY tricky! If you enjoy this book, you might also enjoy some of her other books, like The Night Before Kindergarten and The Night Before Summer Vacation!  We recommend this book and are sure you will have a lot of laughs if you read it!

For the next two weeks or so, we will be reading the nominess for the Children's Book Choice Awards and reviewing them!  Enjoy!

The first nominee that we read is Bailey by Harry Bliss.

Bailey is a funny story about a cute dog named Bailey who goes to school!  He has to chase the bus.  He ate his own homework. And he does his report on not the President, but....the President's dog!   He wanted to trade his lunch, but we weren't convinced the girl wanted a bone instead of her peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Out of five stars, we give this book five stars!

Our second CBC nominee to read is:
Pirates Don't Take Baths by John Segal

Pirates Don't Take Baths is a silly story about a little pig who does NOT want to take a bath.  He tells his Momma Pig that he is a pirate and that pirate's don't take baths.  She points out that pirates also don't get seasick, but he does.  He also tries to tell her he is an Eskimo, but she points out that he'd have to eat walrus liver and whale blubber.  Oooo....gross!  He tries many other excuses to get out of taking his bath, but eventually his mom convinces him to be an underwater explorer......in the TUB!  This book also was rated 5 stars by most of our class!

Another CBC nominee!

Not to be confused with our class favorite, The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, Dot is another clever, fun book that shows the importance of this (seemingly) simple mark/shape! It has pretty cool ideas that relate to a dot. For example, a hungry dot looks like an empty circle, but a full dot is big and plump. This book earned our rating of 4 stars!

Zombie in Love is a romantic story about a zombie named Mortimer who is lonely and has lady troubles. Even though he tries and tries, no one wants to be his date to the Cupid Ball.  You'll have to read the story to find out if Mortimer finds true love or not! Max's favorite part was when Mortimer gave the shop lady a sparkling, diamond ring.  Unfortunately, there was already a finger attached.... We give this book five stars!

Three Hens and a Peacock by Lester Laminack is a fun book about three hens who are jealous of a peacock's job at the farm.  The peacock wants a more important job, so they switch!  It is an example of the saying, "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence".  We think all the birds learned a lesson.  Read to find out what that lesson was.  As a class, we gave this book 3 stars.
